Description

ajradhara Painting – Primordial Buddha of Clarity and Wisdom” is a sacred Tibetan Buddhist thangka that represents the highest and most subtle principle of enlightenment in Vajrayana Buddhism. It centers on Vajradhara, who is regarded as the Primordial Buddha—the timeless source from which all tantric teachings and enlightened lineages originate.

Unlike historical Buddhas who appear in human history, Vajradhara is not portrayed as a teacher in a physical world but as the embodiment of absolute awakened awareness itself. He symbolizes the state of mind that is completely free from ignorance, duality, and conceptual limitation. The title “Primordial Buddha of Clarity and Wisdom” refers to this pure, non-dual consciousness—lucid, spacious, and inseparable from ultimate truth.

In the painting, Vajradhara is typically shown seated in a deep meditative lotus posture, resting on a lotus throne that represents purity arising from the world of samsara without being affected by it. His body is often depicted in a deep blue color, symbolizing the vast, boundless nature of consciousness—like an infinite sky or ocean of awareness.

His hands hold two essential tantric symbols:

  • The vajra (thunderbolt scepter) in one hand, representing indestructible wisdom and skillful means
  • The bell in the other, representing emptiness and the feminine principle of wisdom

Together, they symbolize the core Vajrayana teaching: the union of wisdom and compassion, or the inseparability of emptiness and form.
